Baby swim essentials packed beside a soft towel for a first lesson

First lesson day is exciting — and a little unknown. The good news: you do not need a boot-full of gear. A small, thoughtful bag is enough.

What to pack

  • Swim nappy / aqua nappy suitable for the pool (plus a spare).
  • Towel — a hooded baby towel is lovely if you have one.
  • Dry change of clothes for after the lesson.
  • Nappy and wipes for afterwards.
  • Plastic bag for wet items.
  • Your bathers — baby classes are parent-in-water.
  • Hair tie / clip if you prefer hair off your face in the water.
  • Water bottle for you.

Optional extras: a favourite small comfort item for the car ride home, and a snack for after class if your baby is ready for solids.

What you do not need

Floatation wings, large toys, or a perfect routine. We provide the teaching structure. Your job is to be present, warm and responsive.

Tips for a calm first visit

  • Arrive a little early so changing does not feel rushed.
  • Feed before you leave if that usually helps your baby settle.
  • Talk to your baby in the water — your voice is the familiar anchor.
  • Expect a range of reactions. Smiles, watching, quiet focus or a few protests can all be normal on day one.
  • Trust the pace. Our teachers will guide you. Nothing is forced.

After the lesson

Dry off, warm up, and keep the experience light. A short positive chat — “You did swimming today” — helps build a happy association for next week.

If you are booking Free Newborn Classes (8–15 weeks) or Little Pearls (4–8 months), we are ready to welcome you both into the water.
